Each provider's rules are different, so always read the policy documents. These are the exclusions that catch people out most often.
Faults you already have
If something is already wrong when you take out a plan, it won't be covered. That's why it's best to get cover before you need it, not after your boiler breaks down.
The waiting period
You can't claim straight away. Among the providers we compare, the waiting period is 14 days with British Gas and 28 days with HomeServe.
A new boiler, if yours is too old
Plans will repair your boiler, but replacing it is usually limited. The providers we compare only replace a boiler they can't fix if it's under 7 years old, with other conditions. For older boilers you'll usually pay for a replacement yourself, though some providers offer a discount.
Sludge and limescale
Build-up in your system is often treated as wear rather than a breakdown. Cleaning it out, for example with a power flush, is commonly excluded or charged extra.
Things a boiler-only plan doesn't include
A boiler-only plan usually covers the boiler itself and its controls. Leaking radiators, valves and pipework are usually only included in boiler and central heating plans. Check which you're buying.
Getting to the problem, and making good afterwards
If an engineer has to lift floorboards, remove tiles or open up a boxed-in pipe, the cost of putting it all back is often not included.
Your excess
Many plans charge an excess, or call-out fee, each time you claim. A plan with a £100 excess is cheaper each month, but costs more every time something goes wrong.
Other boilers and other homes
Gas boiler plans don't cover oil, LPG or electric boilers, and standard homeowner plans don't usually cover a property you rent out.
Compare what's included
Our comparison shows each plan's excess, what it covers and its year-two price where published.
