Choose British Gas if…
- You want an annual service included and the option of no excess at all.
- Fast call-outs matter most to you. British Gas says 80% of customers who call by 11am get an engineer the same day.
- You'd value accidental damage cover.
- You want the shorter waiting period: 14 days rather than 28.
Choose HomeServe if…
- Price comes first. HomeServe's boiler and central heating plan was less than half the British Gas price on the day we checked.
- You're happy to pay an excess when you claim, and arrange your annual service separately or add it at checkout.
- You'll compare again at renewal, so the year-two rise matters less.
Compare like with like
The gap is smaller than it looks if you'd pay for a yearly service anyway, or you want £0 excess. Work out the cost over two years, with the service and excess you'd actually choose, before deciding. With either provider, faults that already exist when you join aren't covered.
