Boiler cover for older boilers

Older boilers break down more often, which is exactly when cover is most useful. But there are a few catches worth knowing before you buy.

Prices checked on each provider's website on 29 October 2026, for new homeowners. Your price may vary by postcode, boiler and excess.

Can you get cover for an old boiler?

Often, yes. Of the providers we compare, Hometree says its boiler plans cover gas boilers of any make or age. Other providers may ask about your boiler's age and condition when you get a quote, so give accurate details: a claim can be turned down if the information you gave was wrong.

The big catch: replacement

Cover will pay to repair an older boiler, but usually not to replace it. All three providers we compare only replace a boiler they can't fix if it's under 7 years old, with other conditions. If your boiler is older and can't be repaired, you'll normally pay for a new one yourself, though some providers offer a discount.

Plan for this. If your boiler is well past 10 years old, cover protects you from repair bills, but it's worth putting some money aside towards a replacement too.

What to check before you buy

Is it worth it for an older boiler?

Usually more than for a new one. A new boiler is often still under the manufacturer's warranty, so cover can overlap with protection you already have. An older boiler has no warranty and more to go wrong. See is boiler cover worth it? for the full set of questions.
