How the calculator works
- With cover = what you'd pay in monthly premiums over two years, plus your excess for each breakdown, plus a service if you want one and the plan doesn't include it.
- Without cover = the repair bill for each breakdown, plus a service if you want one.
- It uses averages. A single big repair can cost far more than the average: heat exchanger and circuit board repairs can run to several hundred pounds.
What the numbers don't show
- Peace of mind. One number to call, and no surprise bill. That's worth more to some people than others.
- Calling the wrong person. When you're not sure what's wrong, it's easy to call a plumber when you actually need a gas engineer. Most tradespeople charge a call-out fee for their time even if they can't fix the problem, so a wrong guess can quickly add to your bill. With cover, your provider works out who to send.
- Needing more than one trade. A heating problem can involve plumbing, gas and electrical work. Paying separate tradespeople for each part soon adds up. A boiler and central heating plan covers the repair to your boiler, controls and heating system under one claim.
- Out-of-hours rates. If your boiler breaks down in the evening, at the weekend or on a bank holiday, a private engineer may charge emergency rates on top of the repair. With cover, you pay your plan's excess, whatever time you call. Check each plan's policy for call-out hours.
- A new boiler. The providers we compare will replace a boiler they can't fix if it's under 7 years old, with conditions. That could be worth thousands, but only if your boiler qualifies.
- Existing faults. Cover won't pay for anything already wrong when you join, and there's a waiting period. What boiler cover doesn't include.
